My demo as of September 2023, featuring work done on University Radio York, Manx Radio and BBC Radio York.
From January 2022 to July 2023 I worked as a Journalism Coordinator across the BBC Radio York schedule. This involved supporting presenters and producers in the output of live radio programmes. I regularly edited audio, booked guests and drove the mixing desk during outside broadcasts.
During this period I also worked as a reporter covering stories including Ukrainian Independence Day in 2022 coinciding with six months of war, the impact of rail timetable changes on North Yorkshire residents and GCSE Results Day.
I’ve also read news bulletins on BBC Radio York.
Manx Radio is the Isle of Man’s national public service broadcaster and was where I caught the bug for broadcasting in 2017/2018 during work experience. Since then, I’ve brought Manx Radio’s multimedia audience coverage of the Commonwealth Games, the 2021 Isle of Man General Election and worked on daily news journalism in the newsroom.
Working in the newsroom I’ve read bulletins and reported on issues including campaigns about footpaths, the language learning decline and economic decisions made by the Island’s Treasury and challenged a covid-sceptic.
I’ve produced special documentaries including an investigation into political engagement by young voters on the Isle of Man, the 70th anniversary of Rushen Silver Band the work of the emergency services.
My 2018 programme 'Youth in Politics' won the Best Factual Programme at the 2019 Young ARIAs.
Between 2019-2020 I worked on Perspective, producing occasional episodes of the weekly Sunday lunchtime debate and discussion show. Topics included the language learning decline, a timeline of the abortion reform debate and reflections on going to University during Covid-19.
At the 2022 Commonwealth Games I worked on a team of three in Birmingham covering Team Isle of Man for Manx Radio.
We kept audiences up to date on the Manx Radio website with live text updates and regular fresh news stories. On social media we published more than 80 videos including ‘Meet the Team’ features, post competition interviews and daily roundups. On air, our small team produced and presented 8 live shows rounding up sporting action, getting insight from experts and reflecting the festival atmosphere of the Games.
I interviewed athletes, edited audio and video, live-blogged swimming, cycling, athletics and more and produced and presented live radio and social media updates for Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
Manx Radio provided leading coverage of the September 2021 General Election to the House of Keys on the Isle of Man, and I worked closely with the team producing its coverage. In April, I produced a guide for people who wanted to know what to expect from the months in the lead-up to polling day. As the Island entered its ‘pre-election period’ I interviewed a senior civil servant about what that meant and worked on news stories linked to the election, including requesting figures for the number of registered voters. I interviewed candidates, produced one of the live constituency debates and recorded content for the Candid Candidate videos. On election results night, I reported live from the count in my own constituency of Arbory, Castletown and Malew.
I joined University Radio York within my first month of University in 2020. Covid-19 restrictions limiting where I could go and how many people I could spend time with, it was a wonderful group of people who had formed creative solutions to broadcasting and welcomed me with open arms.
As part of the station’s news and sport team, which I went on to lead, I interviewed the vice chancellor and presented episodes of Newshour covering student topics including spiking, strikes and the rising cost of rents.
I led coverage of two elections for North Yorkshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioners, coordinating interviews with candidates and packaging them into programmes and digital content.
During Roses Weekend in 2023 I presented three two hour all speech breakfast shows rounding up scores, interviewing teams and building the excitement for the daily action.
I presented URY Breakfast on the morning after the death of Queen Elizabeth II and interviewed York residents with memories of the Queen and a grief counsellor – a programme I will always remember.
In my final year at York, I was URY’s station manager. Here I drove recruitment, ensuring we got out and about and could be seen and heard as much as possible at the start of term. Working with Ofcom and alumni advisors, I secured URY’s 5 year FM licence (upgraded from a 1 year trial) and developed opportunities, including a collaboration with BBC Radio York, for members to improve their broadcasting skills.
During my final year I presented a fun show called Campus Criss Cross where I hid in a different part of campus and live guests and listeners had to guess where I was.
On York Student Television I presented a weekly magazine show called York Yesterday, interviewing different societies and people who made campus life in York so special.
From January to December 2022, I was part of the team at Audio Always producing The TT Podcast for the Isle of Man Government. I remotely worked on this project by producing briefings on guests for presenters and writing articles to promote the podcast and episode descriptions.
